Seeking The Kingdom First at KEC 2025

We praise God that over the Easter long weekend, over 2,400 adults, youth and children gathered at Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC) to be empowered by God’s Word. Through powerful Bible talks, inspiring testimonies and uplifting worship in song, delegates were encouraged to seek the Kingdom first.

Among the many who joined us, delegates travelled from Western Australia to be there in person, while another tuned in via livestream all the way from Singapore.

During the Monday open mic session, Wesley from Darwin shared, “Coming here and singing hymns that everyone knows, feeling the building reverberate with so many voices… it’s something I only get when I’m here.”

This year 1,912 delegates joined the Adult Program to hear from a wide range of international and local speakers. We were blessed by the faithful teaching of Kirk Patston, Glen Scrivener, and Phil Ryken, and encouraged by special guest Anna Powell, who shared short talks every evening. Anna’s honest reflections helped us see our stories—failures and all—through a kingdom lens. As she reminded us, “I am completely secure in Him, and this is a kingdom worth seeking first.”

Throughout the weekend, we were reminded that while the world shouts “seek success, sex, self, and stuff!”, Jesus gently calls us to something far better: seek first the Kingdom of God. We were challenged to pray “Thy Kingdom Come” not just with words, but with Kingdom-shaped prayers that reflect our deep longing to see God at work—in our lives, our churches, and our world.

Kirk Patston took us deep into the book of Job, leading us through riddles and the raw poetry of suffering. His thoughtful teaching reminded us that the ‘heavy chapters of lament in the Bible is to assure us that God is thoroughly familiar with how hard our lives can be’. Through Job’s story, we were encouraged to remain faithful in both joy and sorrow, to trust God in the uncertainty, and that He is always worthy of praise.

On Sunday, we were also challenged by Phil Ryken to proclaim the Kingdom—to be bold, contagious Christians who seize every opportunity to speak of Jesus.

While adults enjoyed rich teaching and fellowship in the main session, 555 children and youth were served by one of eight programs, ranging from toddlers to Senior High (Year 11-12). Quiz Worx served the Primary Program with puppetry, music and stories, while Kohei Yamada taught Junior High, and Joshua Kim in Senior High.

“A Great Gift and Privilege”: How KEC Encouraged Kathryn’s Family

For Kathryn and her family, Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC) was an opportunity to step out of life’s busyness and be deeply encouraged in their faith. Though they had only attended one day of KEC in 2023, last year they committed to the full experience. Read Kathryn’s story below.

1. Can you please introduce yourself and your family?

My name is Kathryn, and I attended KEC 2024 with my husband, Amish, and two daughters, Jasmine and Lani (16 and 19 years old). While we had attended one day of KEC 2023, this was our first KEC that we attended in full.   

2. What made you start attending KEC?

For a number of years now, we have had numerous friends share their own KEC experiences and speak highly about the entire weekend. It was this alongside their kind invitation to attend with them that encouraged us to start attending. 

3. What was the highlight of your KEC experience?

As this was our first year attending, we felt everything was a highlight – the ease of registering, friendly welcomers, meeting new and old faces, worshipping God together, learning and growing in God’s word. My daughters also attended the night sessions which they absolutely loved.

4. How has KEC encouraged your faith

I was particularly encouraged by the intentionality to live Hebrews 10:25 [in] ‘not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.’  It is a great gift and privilege to worship alongside my family, friends and others, share in God’s Word, and bear each other’s burdens. Alongside this, it has reminded me that my journey with Christ is not a solitary one. Instead, it is woven into the fabric of a much larger story – one where each person’s faith contributes to building and strengthening the whole body of Christ. 

It is a great gift and privilege to worship alongside my family, friends and others, share in God’s Word, and bear each other’s burdens. Alongside this, it has reminded me that my journey with Christ is not a solitary one.

5. Why would you recommend KEC to other families?

Whether you are exploring faith or a seasoned Christian, KEC invites you to explore your questions, share your burdens and joys, and meet like-minded people doing just the same. It is a safe environment for all ages, where talks and activities are both engaging and transformative.

Sneak Peek of Talks at KEC25

With only a few weeks to go until Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC), we’re excited to give you a preview of what’s in store for the adult program this year! Our speakers—Phil Ryken, Kirk Patston, and Glen Scrivener—will be opening the Scriptures to help us explore what it truly means to seek God’s Kingdom first. Here’s what you can expect from their talks:

Kingdom Come! – Phil Ryken

What does it really mean to seek God’s Kingdom first? Phil Ryken will be unpacking this question in a four-part sermon series titled Kingdom Come!. Drawing from both the Old and New Testaments, he will challenge us to consider how the Kingdom of God shapes our priorities, transforms our prayer life, fuels our evangelism, and anchors our hope for eternity. Expect rich biblical teaching that will encourage and equip you to live each day with Kingdom-minded purpose.

Stubborn Seeking – Kirk Patston

Life is full of hardships, disappointments, and suffering—but how do we continue to seek God’s Kingdom in the midst of them? Kirk Patston will be preaching from the book of Job in a series called Stubborn Seeking. His talks will explore the difficult questions that arise in suffering—questions about our faith in God, our expectations of life, and our relationships with family and community. Through Job’s story, Kirk will point us toward the faithfulness of God and the hope that sustains us in trials.

Christ’s Passion – Glen Scrivener

Before we can seek God’s Kingdom, we must first look to the One who sought it perfectly—Jesus. In his three-part series Christ’s Passion, Glen Scrivener will open up the Psalms to show us how Jesus is the ultimate ‘seeker’ of God’s Kingdom. His zeal and devotion serve as both our hope and our example, strengthening our faith and deepening our love for God. These talks will be a powerful reminder that our ability to seek God first is only possible because Christ sought us first.

“20 Years of Encouragement”: Merilyn’s KEC Story

Through powerful teaching, shared worship, and time spent with others, Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC) has left a lasting impact on countless families. Merilyn’s story is one of them. With over 20 years of KEC under her belt, it has been a significant part of her walk with God.

1. Please introduce yourself!

Hi! I’m Merilyn, and I’m married to my wonderful husband, Ray. We’ve been very blessed with three terrific children who are all married now, and we have five beautiful grandkids, with another one on the way!

2. How many KEC’s have you been to and what made you start attending?

We’ve been to about 20 KECs since our first back in 2003. Our good friend Helen from church had been encouraging us for a few years, and we’re so thankful she didn’t give up! We had a great time, and our kids—who were 12, 11, and 9 at the time—really enjoyed it too. They were eager to go back the next year, so we did! We also then took my sister’s family along, and that became our rhythm for many years.

3. Can you share a KEC highlight?

There’s a moment I’ll always remember, though it’s hard to fully describe. It was from one of the speakers, who passionately spoke the threefold “Holy, holy, holy”. The words were so loud and deep, echoing through the auditorium in a powerful way. Even though it was many years ago, every time I read those words, I’m reminded of the awesomeness and greatness of God – He is Worthy!!

4. How has KEC encouraged your faith?

God always has something to teach me, I never choose KEC based on the theme or who the speakers might be, the songs, others who share… I know it’s going to help me grow in my Christian walk.

As a couple, we haven’t been able to attend KEC in person recently. Instead, we’ve gathered a small group of others who are also unable to attend. For the four days of the convention, we meet in a different home each day to fellowship, share, and experience the convention together in a new way.

5. Why would you recommend KEC to others?

KEC brings together people from many denominations, it’s a beautiful reminder that we’re all part of the same body and are indeed ‘all one in Christ Jesus’.

“I Had Been Praying for Years” – A Testimony of Faith at KEC

For Camille, attending Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC) for the first time wasn’t just about hearing great Bible teaching or enjoying time in the mountains — it was about witnessing God’s transforming power in a close friend’s life. Though she only attended one night session, Camille left deeply encouraged by the unity, worship, and impact of the gospel at KEC.

1. Can you please introduce yourself and when you started attending KEC?

My name is Camille. I’m 24 and I’ve been fortunate to be Christian all my life. I went to KEC last year with my boyfriend Peter, and another couple – Eliza and Ben. They were there for the entire weekend, but Peter and I just attended the night session. This was my first ever KEC!

2. What made you start attending KEC? 

I came along to KEC because of Eliza. She has always one of my closest friends but wasn’t a Christian. She had been brought along to KEC the year before (2023) by her partner’s family, and later described to me how she was so moved during the weekend that it brought her to tears.

That weekend was a massive turning point for her and now she has a relationship with Jesus! When she invited me to come along last year, I was really interested to see what it was all about, and what exactly it was about KEC that had been so powerful for her.

3. Can you share a KEC highlight?

I think my highlight was standing in the congregation, next to Eliza, thinking just how incredible it was that we were here, together, worshipping God. I had been praying for Eliza for many years and it was just so incredible to see her fully embracing the faith and so changed. We don’t go to the same church, so this is still a new and special experience for me.

4. Why would you recommend KEC to others?

KEC has been an encouragement to me in many ways, but particularly in how it has shaped Eliza’s journey. Even though I only attended one night session, I would recommend KEC as it was a beautiful way to spend Easter, surrounded by God’s family. It’s not often you’re singing with a chorus of hundreds of Christians or praying alongside that many brothers and sisters in one place. So, I really appreciate the opportunity that KEC offers for Christians from different walks of life to come together.

“My Favourite Time of the Year”: Kayla’s KEC Story

Kayla’s journey with Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC) began when she was just five years old, attending alongside her parents. What started as a childhood tradition quickly became one of the most formative influences on her faith. Through the faithful example of other Christians and digging into God’s Word, Kayla has found a place that continues to strengthen her faith year after year, reminding her that ‘we aren’t alone’.

1. Can you please introduce yourself and when you started attending KEC?

My name is Kayla and I been to 20 Easter conventions starting from when I was five years old! I started attending with my Mum and Dad and now with my husband Jono, since we got married in 2022.

2. What made you start attending KEC? 

It was definitely my parents’ decision for that first year (I was a child haha) but it very quickly became just about my favourite time of the year. I so looked forward to the kids program each year and catching up with the same friends each year. As an adult, I continue to attend as I find so much value in spending solid time in God’s word and in fellowship with other Christians from all over NSW and beyond. 

3. Can you share a KEC highlight?

Growing up attending the kids program every year was a highlight. Being encouraged by other Christians my age as well as the leaders who I always thought were so cool. I would recite the memory verses, the talks and discussion times played a huge part in my Christian journey and in my growth as a Christian. 

As an adult, the talks each year are a definite highlight. Working through multiple different parts of the Bible each convention means a lot gets covered in only 4 days and hearing from speakers from around Australia and the world can give different perspectives and ways of explaining things that is so helpful.  

And then of course spending a long weekend away in the beautiful Blue Mountains each year with family is special as well.

4. How has KEC encouraged your faith? 

I think there are more moments, memory verses and talks from my childhoods at KEC that have influenced my faith and helped my faith endure than I can remember. Even just gathering with so many Christians from all walks of life and know that we all love and serve the Lord and are brothers and sisters in Christ is so encouraging each year. It really reminds me that we aren’t alone in our faith and even just how powerful the Lord is.

Attending as a child and growing up at KEC was such a blessing. I’m thankful that my parents made this part of our yearly routine. It’s even just so valuable having other Christians faithfully modelling a life lived for Christ to your children, especially when they are teens and might not want to hear about God from you!

I think now as an adult, it is so encouraging to spend solid few days immersed in the word in a beautiful part of God’s creation and to be reminded that we are part of something so much bigger than ourselves – being part of God’s family. 

It’s even just so valuable having other Christians faithfully modelling a life lived for Christ to your children, especially when they are teens and might not want to hear about God from you!

Planning to join us at Katoomba Easter Convention but not sure how to make the most of your day? Here’s a simple guide to help you plan your visit and enjoy everything KEC has to offer!

For Adults:

Choose Your Day: Come any day from Fri-Mon for an enriching experience filled with worship and teaching.
Attend Morning Sessions: Start your day with two inspiring morning sessions. Be ready to dive deep into God’s Word alongside other attendees. During the morning break, enjoy a sweet treat at morning tea, browse the bookstall and visit our Ministry Partners in the Plaza.
Break for Lunch: After the sessions, enjoy a relaxing lunch. Bring your own or grab a bite from local eateries! Many cafes and restaurants around Katoomba Main Street and Leura are open during the long weekend, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Explore Katoomba: Since you’ve already made the trek, take the opportunity to explore the stunning sights around Katoomba. Visit the iconic Three Sisters, take a bushwalk, or enjoy the charming local shops where you can find Katoomba specialty products and other unique trinkets.
Fellowship Together: Spend time connecting with other attendees over coffee or food during the breaks. You never know who you might meet and how your faith might be encouraged!

Morning Kids Programs: Check your child into one of the engaging kids programs we run every morning. Check-in times are:
- 8:30am: Primary and Junior High programs.
- 8:45am: Keenites, Pre-School, Infants, and Senior High programs.
Exciting Activities: Kids will enjoy age-appropriate Bible teaching, fun activities, and a chance to make new friends in a safe environment.
Evening for Teens: If you have children in Junior or Senior High, they’re also welcome to join the Adults Program and attend the evening sessions for a time of worship and teaching.
Pizza on the Plaza for teens: Junior and Senior High kids are also welcome to join the Sunday night Pizza on the Plaza, a special treat hosted by their program leaders. We recommend you RSVP in advance if your children plan to attend.

“A Spiritual Intensive For Our Family”: Amelia’s KEC Story

For Amelia and her family, Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC) isn’t just a yearly event—it’s a cherished tradition that has shaped their faith over the years. From attending as a teenager in the Junior High program to now bringing her own children along, Amelia shares why KEC is a “spiritual intensive” for the family, equipping them with the tools to stand firm in their faith.

1. Please introduce your family!

Hi my name is Amelia and I am married to Pete. We have two daughters, Norah, who is 4 years old and Florence, who is 6 months. We go to Maitland Evangelical Church in the Hunter Valley and together we’ve attended about ten KEC’s. Plus, we’ve volunteered on the Junior High team and we’ve listened online.

2. What made you start attending KEC?

Initially, I came along to KEC with my family and I attended the Junior High program. It was freezing cold that year and we were all squeezed into Clairvaux. I remember the talks were on the theme of ‘Killing the Me-First Monster.”

Being from rural NSW, my first KEC was quite an impactful experience because at the time I only had one other Christian friend, and the concept of actively fighting against our sinfulness was pretty unfamiliar.

Going to KEC that first time brought forth so much fruit in my life because it encouraged me to develop healthy spiritual habits, plus it was super fun! Now that I am Mum, I’ve been praying that KEC will be an encouragement to my girls just like it was me!

3. What is the highlight of your KEC experience?

Picking just one highlight is such a tough task because each year I am so richly blessed. However, last year we decided to take our daughter Norah along to the night program despite it being well past her bedtime. After the shared dinner in the courtyard, we went into the auditorium and Norah was immediately excited by the buzz. She was welcomed by many different people and was so comfortable that when the music started, she sang along and danced in the aisle.

It was particularly encouraging for me because it gave me a real sense of God’s big family and it gave us a chance to worship together. Moreover, I was really grateful that she felt like the ‘big program’ was as much for her as it was for the adults. If you’re apprehensive about taking your kids along to the night program, don’t be!

4. How has KEC encouraged you and your kids’ faith?

Norah recently had the opportunity to complete an ‘intensive week’ at our local swim school. And although she can already swim, she attended 6 lessons over the week and was taught the survival skills she needed to feel confident in the water. I feel as though KEC is a bit of a spiritual intensive for our family, teaching us the survival skills we need to stay firm in the faith.

My husband and I always learn something new about the character of God and as a result, we’re refreshed, renewed and convicted. We leave KEC confident that God will continue to be faithful throughout whatever hardships we might face in the coming year.

Likewise, the kids program spurred my daughter on to tell her friends about Jesus. She still remembers the songs she sang and she often talks about going back to “Easter-Vention”.

5. Why would you recommend KEC to other families?

In the past, KEC has been freezing cold, our family has been over-tired, we’ve spent an hour waiting in traffic and we’ve exhausted ourselves trying to carry our daughter up that massive hill! But each and every year, we have been spurred on to love Christ more. KEC has yielded so much spiritual growth in each of us that it’s worth all the inconveniences.

And plus, the inconveniences are the exact same as the ones you’d be having if you’d stayed home! So why not experience them alongside a thousand other Christians in the beautiful Blue Mountains! The KEC coordinators have done a really great job of making the convention accessible for families. There is a well-equipped parent’s room and there is always someone who is happy to help out if you need.

There’s something for everyone at KEC. We can’t wait to see you in the mountains over Easter!

For our regular attendees, KEC is many things. Families and individuals who come to the mountains every Easter discover that KEC is more than just a conference.

2300+ Inspired to Resist Worldliness at Easter Convention

We praise God that over the Easter long weekend, over 2,300 adults, youth and children gathered at Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC) to be empowered by God’s word. Through powerful Bible talks, inspiring testimonies and uplifting worship in song, delegates were encouraged to fight worldliness and to walk in holiness.

Since 1962, KEC has become a family tradition for many—a cherished space for people of all cultures, generations and denominations to gather as ‘one in Christ Jesus’, to hear and respond to God’s word.

This year 1,768 delegates joined the Adult Program to hear from a wide range of international and local speakers. Through expository preaching, topical talks and inspiring testimonies, KEC speakers encouraged delegates to remain faithful to God, despite the gravitational pull of secularism, and opposition towards Christianity in the Western world.

Program highlights included expository talks by John North (“A Biblical Worldview on Worldliness”), Tim Blencowe (“Jesus Christ Our Greater Treasure”) and Matt Sparks (“A Beautiful Resistance”); Rachel Ciano’s biographical talks, and “Christians & Worldliness” interviews with Paul Tripp and Glen Scrivener.

While adults enjoyed rich teaching and fellowship in the main session, 572 children and youth were served by one of eight programs, ranging from toddlers to Senior High (Year 11-12). Quiz Worx served the Primary Program with puppetry, music and stories while Tim Edwards taught Junior High, and Matt Jacobs in Senior High. Powered by over 200 volunteers, KEC’s age-specific programs gives every family member an opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel each Easter.

While we live in a prosperous country filled with beautiful treasures and alternative wisdoms, it is our hope that KEC has given delegates a renewed confidence in Jesus, the greater treasure. Despite growing confusion and scepticism towards the Bible, we pray that the church will persevere in resisting worldliness and clinging to God’s word for clarity and wisdom for all of life.
