Over 1,400 Men Encouraged to “Wise Up with Jesus” at BASECAMP 2025

This August, 1,400+ men gathered across two weekends to open God’s Word together at BASECAMP 2025.

450+ men met in the heart of Sydney for BASECAMP City, while 900+ men made the trip to the Blue Mountains for BASECAMP Mountains. Another 40+ men joined online, connecting in living rooms, churches, and ministry spaces across Australia. Together, these men represented over 250 churches united under one theme: Wise Up with Jesus.

Whitefield lifted the room with heartfelt worship, leading the men to praise God with one voice. Listen to the BASECAMP 25 playlist here!

International speaker Zack Eswine and local speaker Peter Sondergeld unpacked what it means to grow in true wisdom, drawing from the book of Proverbs and the life of Jesus.

Across the talks, men were reminded that:

  • Meekness is not weakness – it is the strength of God’s power under control.
  • Friendship with Jesus changes everything – shaping how we relate to Him and to others.
  • Wisdom protects – guarding us from the traps of being naive or foolish.

The call was clear: wisdom begins with knowing and following Jesus, the One who loves us deeply and leads us in steadfast love.

Walking Away Changed

Men left BASECAMP encouraged to meditate on God’s unchanging love, to pursue friendships marked by grace and truth, and to walk humbly with Christ in every area of life.

“Attending the Basecamp Men’s Conference was a real blessing for me. It was a refreshing time away to pause, reflect, and be challenged as we dug into the topic of wisdom from God’s Word. Hearing from faithful speakers, sharing honest conversations with other men, and spending time in prayer together helped me see areas in my life where I can grow in humility, godliness, and decision-making… I left feeling inspired and challenged in my walk with Jesus.”
Sebastian, BASECAMP 25 Mountains Attendee

“Thank you so much for all the hard work and prayerful way you serve God’s people with this conference! What an amazing blessing over so many years. Wisdom was an excellent an appropriate and useful topic and the speakers perched from the heart: very moving and encouraging. I thank God for you!”

Stephen, BASECAMP 25 Mountains Attendee

“Every man and his dog should be coming to basecamp to be spiritually renewed and encouraged through the word of God and fellowship with other men and to connect with other men.”

Sul, BASECAMP 25 Mountains Attendee

“It was such a great time of fellowship while also listening to (and supporting each other in) great talks from Zach & Peter. As always, you can’t help but walk away changed and challenged to be more Christ-like, with practical steps that help set us on the right course.”

Andrew, BASECAMP25 City Attendee

Three Decades of Faith & Fellowship: Andrew’s BASECAMP Story

What started as a group sign-up with his church in 1997 has grown into over 30 years of being encouraged by God’s Word and strengthening his brothers in Christ. Andrew shares how BASECAMP has shaped his convictions, challenged him to be a “3am mate,” and why he’s in it for the long haul.

Andrew (far right) with his BASECAMP crew

1. Please introduce yourself!

I’m Andrew Legge (leg), or Leggie (leggy) to my friends and a bunch of past and present Hope 103.2 presenters! (I used to be a regular caller/texter!). I’m 46, go to Bobbin Head Anglican Church (a service plant of St. James, Turramurra), enjoy Piña coladas and getting caught in the rain! I’m pretty sure I’ve been to all Basecamps/ Men’s Conventions since 1997!

2. Why did you start attending BASECAMP?

I became a Christian in Year 8 and was blessed with good preaching and great fellowship, both at St. James and while attending other KCC events like KYC (Katoomba Youth Convention), CYC (City Youth Church), Kyckstart (now KYCK) & Easter Convention. When the church found out that the then-named Men’s Convention was starting up early in ’97, we got a bunch of guys together and signed up.

For me, it kicked off what’s coming up to a 30-year journey! The expedition continues, partly for the same reasons it commenced, but also now with a complimentary, outward focus not only to be fed & encouraged by God through the word and others, but to be that to my fellow brothers, too! I’m here for the long haul and pray that I might be able to attend/ feed/ support for at least another 40-50+ years! To say that the late, great Dudley Foord isn’t my personal, effervescent inspiration in this matter would be a lie!

3. Can you share a BASECAMP highlight?

I have so many amazing talks that come to me when I think about KCC. Unfortunately, I can’t pin down in my mind which are from BASECAMP or the other awesome KCC events I’ve attended. So, instead, I’ll generally echo my earlier comments to reinforce that BASECAMP for me encapsulates faithful bible-based teaching, by faithful and encouraging men, in a fun and playful environment wrapped in great fellowship.

… BASECAMP for me encapsulates faithful bible-based teaching, by faithful and encouraging men, in a fun and playful environment wrapped in great fellowship.

4. How has BASECAMP encouraged and challenged your faith?

It has definitely & significantly contributed to the depth of my Christian conviction, the honing of my personal response to the revelation of the truth found only in the gospels, and the refining of my spiritual and brotherly solidarity when we are ever challenged to give up in both big and small ways.

The conduit for all of this is great, bible-based preaching and the encouragement & direction of mature, like-minded Christian brothers, whether on the pulpit or standing beside me!

5. Last year, you wrote in our feedback form that you were ‘instilled with the importance’ of having a 3am mate. Why do you think this is so important for men?

As guys, any of us with a modicum of emotional awareness recognises that we are typically emotionally stunted, especially when compared with our female counterparts and particularly when it comes to going deeper into less comfortable realms. Even the simple task of talking about being vulnerable can be too much for some of us! It’s no wonder that our inner-circles dwindle into middle age, if not before. So how on earth are we to have or be ourselves a 3am mate without deeper friendships? With intentionality. With persistence. With gentleness. Even some of those characteristics are hard to muster, sometimes.

I’m meeting with two guys, now, since BASECAMP 2024. While I’m in the mentor role for both, someone wiser than me spoke to a group of us once and told us that a mentor/mentee relationship isn’t like that of a Jedi Master/Padawan. A single party doesn’t have all the answers, or even arrogantly think they might. It’s simply about two men getting together so that, as Proverbs 27:17 describes it, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another”, both men learn (sharpen) and both men grow! Being a 3am mate can come from that mentor/mentee role, either because you’re that for each other, or because that partnership can grow in you a deeper other-person-centeredness which other people might see and call on in their time(s) of need!

6. Why would you recommend BASECAMP to others?

For all the reasons above, and possibly others I’m forgetting. If you’re even slightly interested in growing in your faith, growing in your connectedness with other men and possibly, in maturity, wanting to sow into others in both above ways, there’s no good reason for you not to go! If you disagree, let’s chat at BASECAMP (I’ll be the one wearing the cool, blue stripy beanie-scarf)!

Real Conversations for Men’s Health Week

It’s Men’s Health Week in Australia (9-15 June 2025), a time to raise awareness about health challenges faced by men and encourage open, honest conversations.

We believe that men’s health isn’t just physical. It’s also emotional, mental, relational, and spiritual. To mark the week, we asked some of our BASECAMP Christian men some big questions.

From managing stress to supporting each other in tough times, these short videos bring together real answers from real blokes. We appreciate their honesty sharing about their faith, wellbeing, and what it means to live wisely with Jesus at the centre!

Watch a preview of the series:

Watch the full series of videos here:

Men’s Health Week: What Staying Healthy Means

“If you asked me that question 10 years ago, I would have said: exercising right, playing the right sports, and eating the right foods, maintaining a healthy diet. (But it’s) your spiritual, physical and mental health. Getting right with God, looking after your body physically and the content that you consume…”

Men’s Health Week: Managing Stress & Recharging

“Praying to Jesus does a lot just to take my mindset off the anger and helps bring me to a calm state.”

Men’s Health Week: Go-To Bible Verses in Tough Times

You can forget that in difficult times (that we are children of God). You can think the difficulty is defining you or the sum of all your life but to be reminded of what God thinks of you as His child has been really helpful.

Men’s Health Week: What’s Missing in Church Conversations

“I don’t think I’ve really heard many, or if any, conversations in churches that I’ve been a part of about men’s mental health. So I think somehow, introducing the conversation — and maybe that responsibility is on me to start that conversation.”

Men’s Health Week: The Impact of Christian Brotherhood

“I just had a men’s group outing the other day… and what I was really encouraged about was how others deal with certain issues. And some of these guys I was sharing with are almost half my age and I was very encouraged by their maturity.”

Men’s Health Week: Real Support for Real Struggles

“…to be able to sit down with a man and realise what he is going through, not how you can add to his life, but what he’s experiencing. I think just being able to just be an ear to them, even if nothing at the end of that conversation gets achieved or done.”

“A Reset Button for Me”: Corey’s BASECAMP Story

For Corey Matthews, BASECAMP has been a spiritual reset for over two decades. In this interview, Corey reflects on the power of gospel-centered teaching, the strength found in shared vulnerability, and why he believes BASECAMP is one of the best investments a man can make each year.

1. Please introduce yourself!

My name is Corey Matthews. I’ve been married to my wife Carla for 33 years now and we have 4 delightful adult kids, all of them have wonderful partners, 3 of them married and the last one is planning to be married later this year. To date, we have three beautiful grandkids and we are loving this new stage in life.

2. How long have you attended BASECAMP?
I’ve been attending BASECAMP, when possible, since around 2001.

3. How has BASECAMP encouraged your faith?

In my early years of becoming a Christian and attending BASECAMP, I clearly remember the profound impact these events have had on me. They still do today but I think I’ve become more expecting of it knowing how good the teaching and preaching always is.

It’s like a reset button for me, I can be so easily distracted by worldly influences. Conferences like this, sitting under solid teaching for an extended period, enables a spiritual recharge or refocus and gets my perspective and priorities realigned. I think we need this, we need constant reminders of God’s amazing grace.

4. Why do you think men should set aside time to attend conferences like BASECAMP?

I think the vulnerability I have seen by those that have been interviewed or have given testimonies over the years that has been so powerful. Whether it’s been stories of conquering addictions, dealing with chronic illness or disability, or just struggling with sin in general. Understanding that we are all so dependent on God’s grace as we journey through life, and hearing of other people’s experiences and their trust in God, is always such an encouragement to me.

As my wife so rightly says, why wouldn’t  you set aside time for such an amazing opportunity to sit under God’s word with your brothers in Christ and listen to relevant topics that us men need to hear. It’s such a privilege and so many of our brothers from around the world would love to have the accessibility that we do in Sydney, so don’t let this opportunity pass you by.

5. What would you say to someone who’s thinking about coming to BASECAMP for the first time?
It’s one of the best investments, of both your time and money, you’ll make all year!

BASECAMP Early Bird Ends this Week!

Still undecided on BASECAMP men’s conference? Here are 5 reasons to join us this August!

  1. Hear the Bible applied to the lives of men

God’s word is “useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” BASECAMP is an opportunity to focus the application of God’s word on the challenges and opportunities that men experience. This year, Sam Allberry will preach on the theme: “Building Brotherhood”. We’ll also hear a short talk from a returning local speaker, Jonathan Andrews.

  1. Strengthen Men’s Ministry in your church

Use BASECAMP as a platform for men’s ministry among brothers at church. Use this rare opportunity to listen, discuss, share and apply God’s word together as brothers who have been called to run the race together.

  1. Get practical wisdom during program segments

How do we apply the Bible’s teachings to everyday decisions and life struggles? During our program, we have times where Christian men share practical wisdom from personal experience for living all of life for Christ’s glory. Last year, Nate and Chris shared how God has impacted and shaped their lives for Him.

  1. Build stronger friendships

BASECAMP provides a space for men to spend much-needed time together. During breaks and travelling to and from the event, men can share their lives and their struggles, and develop friendships that will help them to stand firm.

  1. Stand with Thousands of Your Brothers

It is a great encouragement for men to meet with their brothers all ages, stages, vocations, locations and denominations. In 2023, BASECAMP welcomed men from 18 denominations and 220 churches. BASECAMP is a rich community and a reminder of the larger church that Jesus has bought us into!

Ready to join us? Grab your Early Bird tickets before they expire!

BASECAMP men’s conference will return this August over two weekends in three different formats:

Men Equipped to Tackle Emotions Biblically at BASECAMP

We praise God that over two weekends in August, over 1,700 men from 286 churches gathered under God’s word at BASECAMP men’s conference.

Men joined the event from across the state, with the largest groups coming from South-West Evangelical Church (Kingsgrove), St Matthew’s Anglican Church (Manly), Hebron Chinese Alliance Church (Westmead), Helensburgh Anglican Church (Helensburgh), and St Thomas Anglican Church (Moorebank).

The livestream option also enabled men from outside of Sydney metropolitan areas to join the event, with churches tuning in from Orange, Kiama, Broken Hill, Canberra and Tasmania.

Each year at BASECAMP, God’s word is preached around a theme that is relevant to men from all walks of life. In 2023, guest speakers Alasdair Groves and Peter Sondergeld spoke on the topic “Unravelling Emotions”, encouraging men to have a biblical view on emotions such as sadness, anger and shame; how to handle them well, and how to process the emotions with God and one another in community.

  • Talk #1: Sometimes it’s Good to Feel Bad – Alasdair Groves (John 11:5-35)
  • Talk #2: Shame and Anger – Peter Sondergeld (Genesis 3:1-13)
  • Talk #3: Engaging Emotions – Alasdair Groves (Psalm 62:1-8)
  • Talk #4: Responding to questions and moving forward – Alasdair Groves (Romans 12:1-21)

For many delegates, BASECAMP 23 highlighted relevant and significant issues that have been overlooked or suppressed:

“The topic of ‘Unravelling Emotions’ was spot on for where I am at right now. I was feeling pretty low and needing to hear a word from God and to feel His love and that is exactly what happened. I cried through almost every song.”

Andrew

“The speakers were the best in years. What a fabulous topic to cover.  It dealt with a topic that has sat unresolved in my faith for the last few years, in a way that nobody has been able to do thus far.”

Grant

“Emotions are something that men generally really struggle with, so for you to tackle this issue was so worthwhile and beneficial.”

Brian

For others, BASECAMP gave them an opportunity to bond with men from church, and to deepen existing friendships through honest conversation. At a time where following Jesus can be a lonely pursuit, BASECAMP reminded many men that they are not alone in their faith:

“BASECAMP opened up new conversations about deeper topics, for the mutual benefit of building each other up in Christ.”

Gerald

“I really enjoyed the atmosphere of being in the company of so many brothers in Christ. The sound of so many men singing was truly uplifting.”

Wayne

“Joining together with so many men as well as the group from our own church is a highlight. This makes it clear that God is moving in men all over the place.”

Meet BASECAMP Speaker: Peter Sondergeld

We are pleased to announce that Lead Pastor of Restoration Church, Peter Sondergeld, will be joining the BASECAMP platform as a keynote speaker.

Meet BASECAMP 23 Speaker: Peter Sondergeld

Joining Alasdair Groves (CCEF), Peter will combine Scripture and biblical counselling experience to help men have a biblical view of what their emotions are, how to handle them well, and how to help each other process with God and one another.

Peter serves as the Lead Pastor at Restoration Church in Toowoomba, Australia. He is also the founder and chair of Restore Ministries and is a registered teacher, counsellor and counselling supervisor. Peter’s qualifications include a Doctor of Ministry (Australian College of Theology) and a Master of Education & Graduate Certificates in Biblical Counselling. His first book, Becoming You, was released in 2022.

He has been married for over 20 years to his loving and encouraging wife Angela, is a father to four teenage sons and is a friend to many. If you don’t catch him equipping, teaching and loving his local church, you will find him enjoying a good coffee, camping with his family or enjoying a mountain bike ride.

Silencing Anxiety

The internal noise generated by anxiety can be deafening. How do you silence it? Some people try to silence it through feverishly gathering more and more information, but it doesn’t ultimately work. In this video, Peter shares some thoughts on a better way forward.

Power & Dignity: How to Build it Without Blowing it

In this talk from the 2018 ‘Restoring True Humanity Workshops’, Peter addresses humanity’s problem with power and our capacity to abuse it. He highlights the type of power that we should refuse while giving us a view of biblical power that we should pursue, as we become more like Christ.

What if Boys Cry?

In 2023, BASECAMP will address the topic of emotions because the team recognises that ‘boys don’t cry’ is one of many damaging principles of a past era. It’s a ‘truth’ that has raised men with suppressed grief, until it explodes in anger or anxiety, causing further damage to their relationships with God and one another.

At BASECAMP, we want to recognise that if men are to live in a world stained by sin, they need community and tools to process grief and disappointment in a godly way. Christian men need to have a biblical view of what their emotions are, what to do with them, and how to help each other. Together, men need to fix their eyes on Jesus, the perfect man and model of emotional expression, and bring the change that is needed.

BASECAMP is for men of all generations, backgrounds and life-stages. Whether you’re fighting anger or anxiety, weariness or worry, register to renew your strength at BASECAMP: https://basecampmen.com/

Meet BASECAMP 23 Speaker: Alasdair Groves

We are pleased to announce that the Executive Director of the Christian Counselling & Education Foundation (CCEF), Alasdair Groves, will be joining the BASECAMP platform as a keynote speaker.

Addressing the topic “Unravelling Emotions”, Alasdair will combine Scripture and Christian counselling experience to help men have a biblical view of what their emotions are, how to handle them well, and how to help each other process with God and one another.

Alasdair received a Master of Divinity with a counselling emphasis from Westminster Theological Seminary. He co-founded a biblical counselling centre in Northern New England where he served as executive director for ten years.

Alasdair also served as the director of CCEF’s School of Biblical Counselling for three years. He is the co-author of Untangling Emotions (Crossway), has published a number of articles in the Journal of Biblical Counselling, hosts the CCEF’s podcast, and has produced many blogs, videos, and audio resources.

Executive Director of CCEF, Alasdair Groves, will be joining the BASECAMP platform as a keynote speaker.
