“It’s An Investment In Your Faith”: Rylea’s KEC Tradition

For this returning attendee, Katoomba Easter Convention isn’t a decision—it’s a rhythm. After more than five years of attending, Rylea now calls KEC a “non-negotiable” part of her year. Amid major life changes, a new job, new degree, and an upcoming wedding—KEC 2025 became a moment to pause, reflect, and surrender afresh.

1. What made you decide to come to Easter Convention this year?

Since my first year attending, Easter Convention is now a non-negotiable. Nothing really makes me ‘decide’ to come because it’s simply a habit now. Easter is such a grounding and resetting time of the year to reflect on my walk as a Christian. Every year I am re-motivated to re-centre my life around Jesus, and having this one long weekend is a perfect “spiritual reset” to remember what is truly important amongst the busyness of life.

Every year I am re-motivated to re-centre my life around Jesus, and having this one long weekend is a perfect “spiritual reset” to remember what is truly important amongst the busyness of life.

2. You’ve been to Easter many times. How was this year different?

Easter did feel quite different this year. In my personal life, I’m in the midst of a big year of change; a new job, a new degree, getting married, and all the things that come with that. I felt a much more emotional response to the talks this year, and I don’t know if it’s simply because of my personal circumstances, or the rawness of the speakers this year.

Each speaker was very honest about where they have lacked, where they have fallen short, and where they still needed to grow. There is always a focus on how we live our lives outwardly, but this year I really felt a shift in my convictions around my perspective, and inner life. How do I view others? How do I truly turn to God first over things or my own might? What is my natural heart posture? Seek First the Kingdom had such a focus on a total surrender of your life and that really spoke to me this year, as I am stepping into so many unknowns, it is comforting to know I don’t need all these extra things, but just one thing: surrender.

3. What was a highlight or moment from the weekend that really stuck with you?

My highlight this year was Kirk Patston’s talks. They were so wonderfully confusing. I often find myself feeling like when I hit a point of God that I don’t understand, I simply need to dig deeper, pray more, ask for a revelation, etc. which are all good things. However, Kirk really opened my eyes to the mystery that is our God. He is so big, and so outside of us that there are things I can never understand, and that’s okay. What a joy it can be to believe in a God that we can never fully know! A constant reminder that God is God and I am not.

4. Was there a particular talk or speaker that encouraged or challenged you? How so?

Definitely Kirk. His honesty through his own struggles, his lack of fear to provide us with riddles and show us all that we do not know, his willingness to leave things unanswered as we grapple with our own thoughts and convictions. It was a unique way of looking at the Bible and discovering more of God’s character that has really changed the way I approach diving deeper into my faith and into the Word.

5. How did you see God at work during your time at KEC?

KEC is such a beautiful time to see God at work through his Spirit. New understandings from old passages, testimonies from other visitors, little whispers during talks. It can be overwhelming to be in a room with thousands of Christians and you may expect to hear such a loud and clear word from God, but I find that in those loud and busy times, God is still in the whisper. He’s in the quiet times after the talks, in your thoughts as you dwell on a word or point from the day. KEC for me is a time when God has already been at work in people’s lives, and KEC is often the final piece of the puzzle for them to connect.

It can be overwhelming to be in a room with thousands of Christians and you may expect to hear such a loud and clear word from God, but I find that in those loud and busy times, God is still in the whisper.

6. What was it like attending KEC with those you came with?

I attended with my fiance and a few friends. It is so encouraging to attend with the people close to me. It was one friend’s first time and one friend’s second, and to see how the weekend refreshed them and enriched them, and their faith was wonderful. It is a wonderful thing to be able to spend 4 uninterrupted days with the people you care about, and to be prompted to have deeper, more insightful, faithful conversations is something I am thankful for each year.

It is a wonderful thing to be able to spend 4 uninterrupted days with the people you care about…

7. Did anything surprise you about the weekend—either practically or spiritually?

I was surprised by the spiritual impact KEC had on me this year. I was really encouraged to have a whole perspective shift into what it means to truly Seek First the Kingdom and to surrender all parts to God. I feel like this has been a deeper step I’ve yet to take, in truly understanding what that means, and whilst I’m by no means perfect, I find myself more equipped to look not into my life and where I can fit God, but into what God is already doing, and how I can be a witness for Him there, surrendering my plans for the plans of the Kingdom.

8. What would you say to someone considering coming to KEC for the first time next year?

Come! Do not hesitate. It’s an investment in your faith; it’s an investment in your future. It’s a weekend away in beautiful Katoomba (with amazing food if you stay at Mountain Camp!), but also, if you let it, it can be such a foundational weekend of your year. I cannot imagine a better way to spend Easter than truly reflecting on all that Jesus has done for me when He died on that cross.

It’s an investment in your faith; it’s an investment in your future. It’s a weekend away in beautiful Katoomba (with amazing food if you stay at Mountain Camp!), but also, if you let it, it can be such a foundational weekend of your year.

9. How has KEC impacted your walk with Jesus as you return to everyday life?

KEC exposes me to so many new ways of thinking and reading the same passages I have read before. With the wide variety of speakers that attend it’s almost impossible to leave without a new perspective. It’s a constant reminder that there are always ways to grow, and that helps me to turn inwards every day, to look at how I can grow in Spirit, grow in fruit, and really show the God I claim to follow through my daily actions, not just through my words.

10. In three words, how would you describe your KEC 2025 experience?

Refreshing, impactful, life-changing.

Fear has become a significant part of everyday life for many people. Despite our technological advancements, rise in living standards, and increases in lifespan, there always seems to be more to fear every day.

One of the most repeated commands of God to His people is “Fear Not!”. Are Christians meant to take this command seriously? If yes, then how do we do it?

Life can be full of challenges, threats, struggles and griefs. Some are over quickly; others can last a lifetime. So how do we handle those in a way that honours our Lord: trusting and obeying Him through our fears?

Only the truth of God—revealed in His word and the life, death and resurrection of His Son—speaks to life as it really is. It speaks not just to fear and pain, but to promise, hope and the victory of light over darkness.

“I Can’t Think of a Better Way to Spend Easter”

For this KEC family, Easter Convention has been a part of their lives for decades. But 2025 brought a new kind of joy — with children growing into new stages, new conversations, and a fresh encouragement to keep seeking God’s Kingdom first. From ‘mind-blowing’ Bible talks to seeing God at work in new friendships, James’ story captures the refreshing and lasting impact of a weekend spent in God’s Word.

1. You’ve been to Easter many times. How was this year different?

My wife and I have come to KEC almost every year since 1998. This year was the first with our youngest children in the Junior High program and the first with our eldest child attending as an adult. This gave us more time to chat, connect with friends and sing each morning, and saved a rush back to the high school before lunch – thankful for a more relaxed experience due to our kids’ ages.

2. What was a highlight or moment from the weekend that really stuck with you?

The theme of “Seek First the Kingdom” I think will very much stick with me, especially as I am about to start working with a new group of people who will be seeking other things first. I felt very much encouraged to stick with Jesus’ priorities and to pray for others to enter his kingdom too.

3. Was there a particular talk or speaker that encouraged or challenged you? How so?

I very much appreciated hearing/seeing Glen Scrivener in person having heard/watched some great content through SpeakLife. The way he opened up Psalm 22 via Psalms 1-2 was mind blowing and very helpful.

4. How did you see God at work during your time at KEC?

I got to know someone who had come to KEC for the first time and seemed very much encouraged by the talks, music, and conversations throughout the weekend. At the end, they said they are very keen to attend again next year.

5. What was it like attending KEC with your family?

Our large family shared a bunk room onsite which was again a fantastic experience. The meals at Hartley/Mountain Camp were superb. We love the mix of separate programs in the morning and combined talks in the evenings.

7. Did anything surprise you about the weekend—either practically or spiritually?

I was surprised with not one but two international speakers!

8. What would you say to someone considering coming to KEC for the first-time next year?

I can’t think of a better way to spend the Easter long weekend. It is worth the expense. It gets even better in future years as you look forward to it more and more.

9. How has KEC impacted your walk with Jesus as you return to everyday life?

The talks and conversations at KEC have spurred me on to put Jesus and His Kingdom first, in every sphere of life.

10. In three words, how would you describe your KEC 2025 experience?

Refreshing, enjoyable, stimulating.

Seeking The Kingdom First at KEC 2025

We praise God that over the Easter long weekend, over 2,400 adults, youth and children gathered at Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC) to be empowered by God’s Word. Through powerful Bible talks, inspiring testimonies and uplifting worship in song, delegates were encouraged to seek the Kingdom first.

Among the many who joined us, delegates travelled from Western Australia to be there in person, while another tuned in via livestream all the way from Singapore.

During the Monday open mic session, Wesley from Darwin shared, “Coming here and singing hymns that everyone knows, feeling the building reverberate with so many voices… it’s something I only get when I’m here.”

Since 1962, KEC has become a family tradition for many—a cherished space for people of all cultures, generations and denominations to gather as ‘one in Christ Jesus’, to hear and respond to God’s Word.

“It’s an annual commitment we make to “reset” for the year.  We are always challenged and encouraged in our relationship with God through the bible talks and program.” – Lisa, KEC 25 Attendee

“KEC spiritually continues to fill me up every year I come, thank you.” – Greer, KEC 25 Attendee

“I loved being inspired and challenged from hearing God’s word taught with clarity, and the great opportunity to meet together with other believers of all ages, from many locations and denominations to fellowship together “All one in Jesus Christ”. – Denise, KEC 25 Attendee

This year 1,912 delegates joined the Adult Program to hear from a wide range of international and local speakers. We were blessed by the faithful teaching of Kirk Patston, Glen Scrivener, and Phil Ryken, and encouraged by special guest Anna Powell, who shared short talks every evening. Anna’s honest reflections helped us see our stories—failures and all—through a kingdom lens. As she reminded us, “I am completely secure in Him, and this is a kingdom worth seeking first.”

Throughout the weekend, we were reminded that while the world shouts “seek success, sex, self, and stuff!”, Jesus gently calls us to something far better: seek first the Kingdom of God. We were challenged to pray “Thy Kingdom Come” not just with words, but with Kingdom-shaped prayers that reflect our deep longing to see God at work—in our lives, our churches, and our world.

Kirk Patston took us deep into the book of Job, leading us through riddles and the raw poetry of suffering. His thoughtful teaching reminded us that the ‘heavy chapters of lament in the Bible is to assure us that God is thoroughly familiar with how hard our lives can be’. Through Job’s story, we were encouraged to remain faithful in both joy and sorrow, to trust God in the uncertainty, and that He is always worthy of praise.

On Sunday, we were also challenged by Phil Ryken to proclaim the Kingdom—to be bold, contagious Christians who seize every opportunity to speak of Jesus.

Here is what a few KEC 25 delegates had to say about the talks:

“The encouragement from God’s Word was delivered through all the speakers.” – Lei

“It is so hard to pick (what encouraged me most) because the concept of Seeking First the Kingdom encompasses all. I was really struck by the idea of a perspective shift, where instead of seeing where/how I can invite God into my life and plans, looking at how He’s already working and asking to be a part of His plans.” – Rylea

“I love the high calibre talks, I’m really spurred on in my faith every year.” – Tina

While adults enjoyed rich teaching and fellowship in the main session, 555 children and youth were served by one of eight programs, ranging from toddlers to Senior High (Year 11-12). Quiz Worx served the Primary Program with puppetry, music and stories, while Kohei Yamada taught Junior High, and Joshua Kim in Senior High.

“Our son, Isaac, has been talking about Jesus dying on the cross for our sins so we can go to heaven! Touches our hearts and we’re so thankful for the wonderful teaching there every year.” – Abigail

“Our youngest child (12) said to me today that every year KEC is the highlight of her year. This is especially because she’s made such good friends and really engaged with the night sessions. Her new friendships are so precious to her as they grow together in faith. And she just loves the evening sessions – being able to sing with so many people, to hear challenging Bible talks, to have fun over supper and to hear encouraging life stories. Our other kids also look forward to KEC each year and would be devastated if we didn’t come.” – James

“A Great Gift and Privilege”: How KEC Encouraged Kathryn’s Family

For Kathryn and her family, Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC) was an opportunity to step out of life’s busyness and be deeply encouraged in their faith. Though they had only attended one day of KEC in 2023, last year they committed to the full experience. Read Kathryn’s story below.

Caption: Kathryn and her husband, Amish

1. Can you please introduce yourself and your family?

My name is Kathryn, and I attended KEC 2024 with my husband, Amish, and two daughters, Jasmine and Lani (16 and 19 years old). While we had attended one day of KEC 2023, this was our first KEC that we attended in full.

2. What made you start attending KEC?

For a number of years now, we have had numerous friends share their own KEC experiences and speak highly about the entire weekend. It was this alongside their kind invitation to attend with them that encouraged us to start attending.

3. What was the highlight of your KEC experience?

As this was our first year attending, we felt everything was a highlight – the ease of registering, friendly welcomers, meeting new and old faces, worshipping God together, learning and growing in God’s word. My daughters also attended the night sessions which they absolutely loved.

4. How has KEC encouraged your faith

I was particularly encouraged by the intentionality to live Hebrews 10:25 [in] ‘not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.’  It is a great gift and privilege to worship alongside my family, friends and others, share in God’s Word, and bear each other’s burdens. Alongside this, it has reminded me that my journey with Christ is not a solitary one. Instead, it is woven into the fabric of a much larger story – one where each person’s faith contributes to building and strengthening the whole body of Christ.

It is a great gift and privilege to worship alongside my family, friends and others, share in God’s Word, and bear each other’s burdens. Alongside this, it has reminded me that my journey with Christ is not a solitary one.

5. Why would you recommend KEC to other families?

Whether you are exploring faith or a seasoned Christian, KEC invites you to explore your questions, share your burdens and joys, and meet like-minded people doing just the same. It is a safe environment for all ages, where talks and activities are both engaging and transformative.

Sneak Peek of Talks at KEC25

With only a few weeks to go until Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC), we’re excited to give you a preview of what’s in store for the adult program this year! Our speakers—Phil Ryken, Kirk Patston, and Glen Scrivener—will be opening the Scriptures to help us explore what it truly means to seek God’s Kingdom first. Here’s what you can expect from their talks:

Kingdom Come! – Phil Ryken

What does it really mean to seek God’s Kingdom first? Phil Ryken will be unpacking this question in a four-part sermon series titled Kingdom Come!. Drawing from both the Old and New Testaments, he will challenge us to consider how the Kingdom of God shapes our priorities, transforms our prayer life, fuels our evangelism, and anchors our hope for eternity. Expect rich biblical teaching that will encourage and equip you to live each day with Kingdom-minded purpose.

Stubborn Seeking – Kirk Patston

Life is full of hardships, disappointments, and suffering—but how do we continue to seek God’s Kingdom in the midst of them? Kirk Patston will be preaching from the book of Job in a series called Stubborn Seeking. His talks will explore the difficult questions that arise in suffering—questions about our faith in God, our expectations of life, and our relationships with family and community. Through Job’s story, Kirk will point us toward the faithfulness of God and the hope that sustains us in trials.

Christ’s Passion – Glen Scrivener

Before we can seek God’s Kingdom, we must first look to the One who sought it perfectly—Jesus. In his three-part series Christ’s Passion, Glen Scrivener will open up the Psalms to show us how Jesus is the ultimate ‘seeker’ of God’s Kingdom. His zeal and devotion serve as both our hope and our example, strengthening our faith and deepening our love for God. These talks will be a powerful reminder that our ability to seek God first is only possible because Christ sought us first.

KEC25 is shaping up to be an incredible weekend of learning, fellowship, and encouragement. We can’t wait to see how God will use these talks to challenge and grow us in faith. If you haven’t registered yet, now is the time—don’t miss out!

There’s still time to register!

“I Had Been Praying for Years” – A Testimony of Faith at KEC

For Camille, attending Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC) for the first time wasn’t just about hearing great Bible teaching or enjoying time in the mountains — it was about witnessing God’s transforming power in a close friend’s life. Though she only attended one night session, Camille left deeply encouraged by the unity, worship, and impact of the gospel at KEC.

1. Can you please introduce yourself and when you started attending KEC?

My name is Camille. I’m 24 and I’ve been fortunate to be Christian all my life. I went to KEC last year with my boyfriend Peter, and another couple – Eliza and Ben. They were there for the entire weekend, but Peter and I just attended the night session. This was my first ever KEC!

2. What made you start attending KEC?

I came along to KEC because of Eliza. She has always one of my closest friends but wasn’t a Christian. She had been brought along to KEC the year before (2023) by her partner’s family, and later described to me how she was so moved during the weekend that it brought her to tears.

That weekend was a massive turning point for her and now she has a relationship with Jesus! When she invited me to come along last year, I was really interested to see what it was all about, and what exactly it was about KEC that had been so powerful for her.

3. Can you share a KEC highlight?

I think my highlight was standing in the congregation, next to Eliza, thinking just how incredible it was that we were here, together, worshipping God. I had been praying for Eliza for many years and it was just so incredible to see her fully embracing the faith and so changed. We don’t go to the same church, so this is still a new and special experience for me.

I had been praying for Eliza for many years and it was just so incredible to see her fully embracing the faith and so changed.

4. Why would you recommend KEC to others?

KEC has been an encouragement to me in many ways, but particularly in how it has shaped Eliza’s journey. Even though I only attended one night session, I would recommend KEC as it was a beautiful way to spend Easter, surrounded by God’s family. It’s not often you’re singing with a chorus of hundreds of Christians or praying alongside that many brothers and sisters in one place. So, I really appreciate the opportunity that KEC offers for Christians from different walks of life to come together.

Whether you spend the whole day or just join us for an evening session, there’s something for everyone at KEC. We can’t wait to see you in the mountains over Easter! Register here.

10 Words that Describe KEC

What is Katoomba Easter Convention to you? If you could describe Easter Convention in one word, what would it be?

For our regular attendees, KEC is many things. Families and individuals who come to the mountains every Easter discover that KEC is more than just a conference.

Here are 10 words our KEC delegates have used to describe what KEC means to them.

1. KEC is a highlight

"It is our family’s highlight to attend every year. We attend for the spiritual growth and worship - we love it!" – Mari

2. KEC is a reset

"Through KEC, God provides a reset for me - a yearly 4 days to refocus on God’s Word, His Kingdom, His plans. I need this!" – Karen

3. KEC is incredibly valuable

"It’s incredibly valuable to us as a family of believers to learn more about God, draw closer to Him, be in fellowship with others and praise and worship Him." – Sharon

4. KEC is a tradition

"It is an Easter tradition for our family to go to KEC, in fact we have been sharing a house with the same group of families for 19 years. We enjoy the atmosphere of singing with so many other Christians and hearing from world class speakers that challenge us and re-orientate us toward God." – Marianne

5. KEC is life-changing

"It will be another life-changing experience for me. In this world wherein we live, we need to stop paying attention to the world around us and actively listen to God's Word. Coming to KEC will once again be a life tool for my spiritual walk with the Lord." – Bruce

6. KEC is practical

"The thing I loved most about KEC was the practical application of the Word. Knowing that being swept up in the passion of the weekend, and in the quality of the teaching, wasn’t going to change my life by itself. The encouragement to really take the talks and commit to apply them in my daily walk has made the most difference out of any conference I’ve been to." – Markus

7. KEC is a top-up

"I attended because I love - and really need - the great Biblical teaching that 'tops me up' in my Christian life. It is SO encouraging and deeply refreshes my faith." – Tori

8. KEC is edifying

"KEC is a long-standing family tradition to attend, which we have consistently found edifying and valuable. It’s an opportunity to spend four days together receiving excellent teaching in a beautiful environment." – Alison

9. KEC is a vital refreshment

"We have been coming most years for the last 25. It is a vital refreshment and encouragement spurring on for our family. We value the teaching, and the kids love the program." – Sarah

10. KEC is family time

"We make the weekend a family time - great teaching and a fabulous time of fellowship with Christian families we have known for 30 years attending." - Katherine

2300+ Inspired to Resist Worldliness at Easter Convention

We praise God that over the Easter long weekend, over 2,300 adults, youth and children gathered at Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC) to be empowered by God’s word. Through powerful Bible talks, inspiring testimonies and uplifting worship in song, delegates were encouraged to fight worldliness and to walk in holiness.

Since 1962, KEC has become a family tradition for many—a cherished space for people of all cultures, generations and denominations to gather as ‘one in Christ Jesus’, to hear and respond to God’s word.

This year 1,768 delegates joined the Adult Program to hear from a wide range of international and local speakers. Through expository preaching, topical talks and inspiring testimonies, KEC speakers encouraged delegates to remain faithful to God, despite the gravitational pull of secularism, and opposition towards Christianity in the Western world.

“I found KEC24 to be one of the best so far, as the teaching was really practical. It had good biblical content but was practical in giving encouragement of how to live the Christian life in our current challenging secular times.”

– Anne, KEC 24 Delegate

“I was very encouraged by how conquering worldliness is something we are both enabled and convicted by the Spirit to do. Although we may be long-time believers, we still live in a period of uncomfortable tension; being pulled in opposite directions and naturally drifting towards worldliness, rather than holiness. By His grace, we are given many “train stations” to recenter our trust in God and turn from darkness to the light!”

– Tiffany, KEC 24 Delegate

“The thing I loved most about KEC was the practical application of the Word. The encouragement to really take the talks and commit to apply them in my daily walk has made the most difference out of any conference I’ve been to.”

– Markus, KEC 24 Delegate

Program highlights included expository talks by John North (“A Biblical Worldview on Worldliness”), Tim Blencowe (“Jesus Christ Our Greater Treasure”) and Matt Sparks (“A Beautiful Resistance”); Rachel Ciano’s biographical talks, and “Christians & Worldliness” interviews with Paul Tripp and Glen Scrivener.

While adults enjoyed rich teaching and fellowship in the main session, 572 children and youth were served by one of eight programs, ranging from toddlers to Senior High (Year 11-12). Quiz Worx served the Primary Program with puppetry, music and stories while Tim Edwards taught Junior High, and Matt Jacobs in Senior High. Powered by over 200 volunteers, KEC’s age-specific programs gives every family member an opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel each Easter.

KEC 24 Children’s Highlights

“Our kids were thriving in the programs each day and when we shared highs and lows, they repeatedly said, “we have no lows!!!”.

– Alysha, KEC 24 Delegate

“My youngest – not currently a Christian, came to the Senior High program and actually went to every session for the first time since COVID. So encouraging.”

– Karen, KEC 24 Delegate

“I was encouraged to see my children excited to learn about Jesus and eager to share what they had learnt with others.”

– Amelia, KEC 24 Delegate

While we live in a prosperous country filled with beautiful treasures and alternative wisdoms, it is our hope that KEC has given delegates a renewed confidence in Jesus, the greater treasure. Despite growing confusion and scepticism towards the Bible, we pray that the church will persevere in resisting worldliness and clinging to God’s word for clarity and wisdom for all of life.
