10 Quotes on Christianity and Worldliness

Trusting that the Bible is God’s good word to us is not always easy, and especially so when the world’s way of thinking and living is at odds with God’s truths. Here are 10 quotes highlighting the temptations and dangers of “worldliness”, and why as Christians, we should strive to resist its pull.

  1. “Worldliness is whatever makes sin look normal and righteousness look strange.” ― Kevin DeYoung

  2. “Worldly wisdom: Waiting is an evil to eliminate. Godly wisdom: Waiting is a virtue to cultivate. Christianity is, by definition, a religion of delayed gratification.” ― Jen Wilkin
  1. “I am wired by nature to love the same toys that the world loves. I start to fit in. I start to love what others love. I start to call earth “home.” Before you know it, I am calling luxuries “needs” and using my money just the way unbelievers do. I begin to forget the war. I don’t think much about people perishing. Missions and unreached people drop out of my mind. I stop dreaming about the triumphs of grace. I sink into a secular mind-set that looks first to what man can do, not what God can do. It is a terrible sickness. And I thank God for those who have forced me again and again toward a wartime mind-set.” ― John Piper
  1. “Holiness (and goodness) should never be determined by the whims, wishes, and standards of a created thing or even a whole culture. Especially when that culture’s ideas are so easily influenced by the deceitful hearts within it, as well as its overall mutability, taking different shapes in conformity to its era. . . . God defines God.” ― Jackie Hill Perry
  1. “Are the things you are living for worth Christ dying for?” ― Leonard Ravenhill
  1. “The sin of worldliness is a preoccupation with the things of this temporal life. It’s accepting and going along with the views and practices of society around us without discerning if they are biblical. I believe that the key to our tendencies toward worldliness lies primarily in the two words “going along”. We simply go along with the values and practices of society.” ― Jerry Bridges
  1. “Ultimately, the gospel is offensive because the cross stands against all schemes of self-salvation.”  ― Tim Keller
  1. “We profess to be strangers and pilgrims, seeking after a country of our own, yet we settle down in the most un-stranger-like fashion, exactly as if we were quite at home and meant to stay as long as we could. I don’t wonder apostolic miracles have died. Apostolic living certainly has.” ― Amy Carmichael
  1. “The world says love yourself, grab all you can, follow your heart. Jesus says deny yourself, grab your cross and follow me.” ― Francis Chan
  1. “The glory of the gospel is that when the church is absolutely different from the world, she invariably attracts it.” ― Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Be Inspired to Conquer Worldliness at Katoomba Easter Convention!

God makes it clear in His word that for His people, the world is a competing loyalty. Anyone who loves the world cannot be a friend of God (James 4:4). It’s one or the other, not both. There is everything at stake in that choice.

So how should Christians resist the gravitational pull of the world? How do we spot where the world has pulled us in and has shaped our thinking and living? How do we stay true to the course God has set out for us? What does ‘holiness’ look like in the 21st century?

At Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC) this year, keynote speakers John North, Tim Blencowe and Matt Sparks will preach on the theme “Conquering Worldliness: Resisting the Gravitational Pull of the World”. Preview the talk series here.  They will also be joined by guest speakers John Lennox, Glen Scrivener and Rachel Ciano who will join us to discuss Christianity and worldliness in the church today.

Tickets are still available! Register today for Katoomba Easter Convention, and join us for a weekend that might change your life, and your family’s, for the glory of God.

Sneak Peek of Talk Series for Easter Convention

With only 4 weekends left until Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC), our team has been busy finalising the program for the Easter long weekend.

This year, keynote speakers John North, Tim Blencowe and Matt Sparks will be joining the adult program to speak on the theme “Conquering Worldliness: Resisting the Gravitational Pull of the World”. Here’s a preview of each of their talk series:

A Biblical Worldview of Worldliness by John North

In this four-part series of talks John North will be leading us in shaping up a Biblical view of “worldliness”: what the Bible says it actually is; how it affects our thinking, our affections and behaviour; how we can adopt it into our lives without even realising; what God help has given us to resist its pull; and how God wants us to engage with the world we live in, in holiness, and not withdraw from it.

Jesus Christ Our Greater Treasure by Tim Blencowe

In this set of four short-talks, Tim Blencowe will be encouraging us from four ‘landmark’ texts for the Christian life. These passages remind us of God’s call on us to love Him, follow Him, live for Him and look for His return, with everything we have. They remind us that while the world has its attractions, distractions and temptations for us, Jesus Christ is our Greater Treasure and it is on Him we need to set our hearts.

A Beautiful Resistance by Matt Sparks

In the evening sessions Matt Sparks will be leading us through three areas of life where we may especially be facing the battle against worldliness. Twenty-first century Australian culture shapes us in many ways, but where especially do we need to be resisting the ‘gravitational pull’ of the world? What habits and practices should we be establishing as Christians to help us do that and keep in step with the Holy Spirit?

There’s still time to grab your KEC tickets!

This Easter long weekend, we invite you to enjoy mornings being refreshed with Bible talks, Christian testimonies and worship; spend afternoons relaxing with friends and family before settling in for more in the evening sessions together. With age-specific programs for everyone from toddlers to grandparents, KEC is a once-in-a-year opportunity to retreat into the beautiful Blue Mountains to grow together as a family.

“I have attended KEC for the last few years since becoming a Christian and can honestly say it is the best weekend of the year. Seeing so many people of different ages come together to worship and to learn (was so encouraging). The talks were all just incredible and I can’t wait to listen to them all again on the KEC+ app.” – Jordan, KEC23 Attendee

Meet BASECAMP 24 Speaker: Sam Allberry

We are pleased to share that pastor, preacher and apologist, Sam Allberry, will be speaking at BASECAMP 2024 on the topic “Building Brotherhood”.

Sam speaks around the world and is the author of Seven Myths About Singleness, Is God Anti-Gay? and What God Has To Say About Our Bodies. He is also the co-host of the podcast You’re Not Crazy: Gospel Sanity for Young Pastors. Sam is the Associate Pastor at Immanuel Church Nashville, a Canon Theologian for the Anglican Church in North America, and a Fellow at the Keller Center for Cultural Apologetics.

In 2024, he will speak at BASECAMP men’s conference, helping delegates to consider God’s design for brotherhood. Sam will share how men can better link arms with other men in their life with Jesus and become a brother that other men can trust and lean on.

Get a taste of his teaching here:

  1. Being a Body

Sam Allberry & Nigel Fortescue have a conversation about singleness and how churches can better serve and love single people in our churches.

  1. How Can I Experience Intimacy Without Sex?

Sam reflects on modern notions of intimacy and expounds the biblical view of intimacy found in married relationships as well as deep friendships.

  1. The Rich Fool

In this sermon from Luke 12, Sam explains the parable of The Rich Fool and what Jesus teaches about human folly. He shares that according to the Bible, “folly is the absence of wisdom”. While the world calls us to be intelligent, the Bible calls us to be wise—and wisdom can only come from knowing and fearing God.

  1. Sam Allberry on Potential Dangers of Small Group

“There are certain things from our Sunday life that we can’t get from our small group life.” In this video, Sam explains the dangers over-prioritising small group, and the value of gathering as a larger body of Christ on Sundays.

Don’t miss out on the BASECAMP early bird!

Contemporary culture would have men think that ‘standing on their own two feet’ is the way to be man, whereas I find it incredibly powerful to see so many Christian men, by their mere presence at BASECAMP, stand and say that relying on Jesus is God’s way to be man.”

— PHILLIP

BASECAMP will return in 2024 over two weekends in three different formats:

  • BASECAMP City (3 August 2024) – A one-day recharge held at the UNSW Roundhouse in Kensington

Tim Blencowe to Speak at Easter Convention 2024

We are pleased to announce that Tim Blencowe will be joining Katoomba Easter Convention (KEC) as a main speaker. Along with John North and Matt Sparks, Tim will unpack the theme ‘Conquering Worldliness: Resisting the Gravitational Pull of the World’, helping delegates to navigate the ‘wisdom’ of the world and to win the battle against worldliness.

According to Tim, Easter is a time for Christians to reflect on God’s love and commitment to His people in the death and resurrection of Jesus. Though it may be our temptation to fill our lives with other loves, Tim hopes that KEC will help delegates to treasure Jesus—the One who promises deep satisfaction and contentment.

Meet KEC24 Speaker: Tim Blencowe

Tim and his family are part of the international community of Macquarie Baptist Church, where he serves as senior pastor and as a chaplain to Macquarie University. Tim was raised in a missionary family, has a background in high school teaching, and enjoys helping people embrace a living faith that integrates the whole of life.

Tim will be giving four short talks each morning over the KEC weekend.

Get a taste of his teaching here:

Let’s Talk About…Integrating Our Faith & Work

In this talk, Tim Blencowe joins the dots between Jesus and work, so that instead of compartmentalising faith and work, Christians can begin to see how their faith correlates with their day-to-day experience.  Watch it here.

How It Ends

In this sermon from 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, Tim encourages listeners to consider their mortality and the realities of death. He compares different religions and belief systems about death, concluding that the resurrection of Jesus is our greatest hope.
